Best things to do in New Bern

Home to two beautiful rivers- one cannot actually question the gracefulness of New Bern. One of the oldest cities of North Carolina, New Bern is filled with emotional American history. The city is home to a variety of cultural and historical sites, museums, galleries, urban parks and gardens, and plenty of attractions and entertainment for the whole family. The Best Things to do in New Bern, North Carolina below will show you more information.

Check out the Tryon Palace

Check out the Tryon Palace

The Tryon Palace was once upon a time a building of historic significance. It is still now an important building for the governor of New Bern to reside here. But, in the old days- the colonial officers called the Tryon Palace their home.

There’s another interesting thing to this- Before the Tryon Palace, there were no permanent State Capitols in all of North Carolina. You can still explore the grounds, gardens, and buildings here.

Explore the “Newest” Destination for Local History

The 60,000’ square foot North Carolina History Center is one of New Bern’s “newest” destinations for fun and education and is a $64 million dollar project that has already made waves with locals and visitors alike. Opened in the summer of 2010 to coincide with the town of New Bern’s 300-year anniversary, the History Center features a sprawling series of exhibits that are designed for visitors of all ages, and of all interests. Kids will love exploring the Pepsi Family Center, which has a ton of hands-on exhibits and interactive displays, while history buffs can peruse the artifacts and memorabilia within the Regional History Museum, which explores all the significant cultural, economic, and natural events that shaped the coastal landscape, as well as the state of North Carolina. Perched on the edge of the Trent River, the impressive North Carolina History Center is a perfect first stop for new visitors who want a full introduction to the region, without missing a thing.

Enjoy the Waterfront Lifestyle

Enjoy the Waterfront Lifestyle

Because New Bern borders two major North Carolina Rivers – the Trent River and the Neuse River – visitors will find that waterfront views and activities abound in this coastal community. Newcomers can start their exploration at the 6-acre Union Point Park, which is found in the heart of the downtown area, and which borders the intersection of both rivers, providing miles upon miles of views. Recently revitalized, the park features plenty of benches and seating, (as well as picnic tables and grills for an easy family meal), playground facilities for kids, on-site restrooms, and a boardwalk that follows the water’s edge, making it an easy venture to take in the panoramic vistas. In addition, the site also boasts two public boat launches, a fishing pier, and a launching area for kayaks, canoes, and even stand-up paddleboards, so visitors can take their on-the-water adventures to the next level. With multiple other options for waterfront recreation in the area that can range from the sunny shorelines of nearby Minnesott Beach to the rustic paddling trails of the Croatan National Forest, enjoying the water is a breeze in this incredible riverfront community.

Enjoy the beautiful New Bern Architecture

One of my personal favorite things to do in New Bern, NC is walking around the streets and enjoying the beautiful architecture of the homes on the US Register of Historic Places. New Bern has more than 150 sites included in the National Register of Historic Places. You will find an array of Georgian, Federal-style, Greek revival, and Victorian homes in New Bern.

The Blades House is one of the state’s finest combinations of Queen Anne style with Colonial Revival details by architect Herbert Woodley Simpson was built in 1907.
